Couples Counseling The research from Dr. John Gottman shows that in successful long term relationships some ways of relating to our intimates are better than others. Couples counseling is for couples who are not married, newly wed, or for couples who have been together for years.
Terry
Sterrenberg is certified clinician and workshop leader in the Gottman
method. He has been trained by Drs. John Gottman and Julie
Gottman in how to use their research. He uses educational and therapeutic
approaches. He allows time for couples to practice the skills of successful
relationships in therapy sessions and then asks the couple to practice the
relationship skills at home. His goal for couples counseling is for couples to be able to use
these skills as a matter of course in their daily lives.
Behavior is an intricate mixture of past experience, physical state, beliefs and perceptions. In couples counseling, therapy is not so much an unraveling of the past as it is a recognition of how the past contributes to present behavior and fires emotional triggers for our partner. The work is to learn new behavior and beliefs (relationship skills) that create friendship, dialogue, and emotional connection in your relationship. Dr. John Gottman discovered two kinds of conflict requiring different problem solving behavior. Mr. Sterrenberg uses a variety of techniques to build relationship skills including video taping in order to help clients become aware of themselves and to help them choose different behavior.
